Double sided Kachelofen

This is one of the first double sided Kachlelöfen that we built. This style of installation can look like two separate ovens. It should however, be thought of as one large oven that passes through a wall or a ceiling into a second room. Many clients choose to have differently designed Kacheln as the oven passes from one room to the other. In this case the client chose to have the same design in both the living room and the kitchen. The firebox is accessed from the living room side. This allows for a beautiful radiant wall in the kitchen. It also means that wood storage and fire access are kept out of the kitchen!

It is interesting that this Kachelofen was installed in a brand new build in Barrie, Ontario. While the St. Gallen design originates in late nineteenth century Switzerland, its clean and modern lines and spare ornamentation have a simple, modern feeling.

This is the same combination of glaze, relief motif and accent tiles as this oven (link to maple key kachelofen), but in an appreciably different configuration. It is noteworthy that these two homes were built over 125 years apart, and yet the Kachelofën feel “right” in both locations.
