The Original Roslyn Kachelofen

This small round stove was designed and built specifically for a century farmhouse in rural southern Ontario. Beside the farmhouse is a nineteenth century one room schoolhouse. The two buildings are connected by a large enclosed breezeway which retained all of its original charm. The Kachelofen was designed to provide a level of warmth to this room, but also to accentuate the “old world feel” of the property.

Jessica will sometimes create life sized cutouts of a Kachelofen in the design stage to make sure that the proportions fit the room properly.

We’ve included a couple of images which nicely show off the unique construction of a Kachelofen. The outer layer of hollow ceramic Kacheln are backfilled with firebrick and mortar to add mass and more evenly disperse heat. A few layers of Kacheln are constructed first. After this outer layer is built up a level or two, the inner firechamber and flue network are assembled in parallel to the outer layer.
