Franken

This Kachelofen style is named after Frankonia – a region in northern Bavaria where Jessica grew up.

While trying to refine the proportions of one of her very first oven designs, Jessica got into a conversation with a local furniture maker who recommended a book called Das Gestalten der Tischlerarbeiten (The Design of Carpentry), by A. Blunck. This book from 1926 helped Jessica understand spatial relationships and sight lines on larger objects, and has been an important resource ever since.

The Franken is our most popular and versatile model of Kachelofen. The oven can be freestanding, or be partially or fully butted up against a wall. The Franken is typically designed as two-tiered. It is however, endlessly customizable. The basic square Kacheln are 20cm x 20cm. They were originally designed to facilitate slip trailing and other symmetrical decorations, but they work well with simple glazes. Jessica took a modular approach with this design. We’ve developed multiple different crown, middle trim and foot profiles over the years, and so there are many different architectural “looks” possible with the Franken!
